Research and Development

Austria has at its disposal today internationally renowned neuroscience institutions primarily in the university area, and also to a lesser degree outside the universities. These neuroscience institutions operate in close cooperation at an interdisciplinary and international level. Outstanding, internationally recognized work has been done particularly in the areas of signal transfers and neuronal cell biology, clinical neurophysiology, functional neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, functional imaging of the central nervous system, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunological inflammation, clinical neuropharmacology, cerebral circulatory disorders and neurooncology.

The goals of Austrian neuroscience research may be expressed as the further development of the primary areas in which Austria has been competitive internationally, of synergies at the groundwork level and in clinically oriented research, promoting national infrastructure, and promoting and creating neurocentres.
University clinics continue to set the direction in the development of neurocentres and the founding of institutes for brain research. These neuroscience centres act as a forceful stimulus for neuroscience research in Austria. The Austrian Neurology Society sees itself as a promoter and sponsor of these developments and also constitutes a platform particularly for clinical neurological scientific research.
